“Now, I’m so glad to have met y’all.” Deirdre hadn’t quit talking since we’d risen from the dining table. She’d followed behind us into the parking lot, right up to Lauren’s car. “And by that I mean, just you two. Those others are so dry my skin started turning ashy.”

“It was nice to meet you too, Deirdre,” Lauren said, sweetly.

“Yeah.” That was as far as I could take it without exposing myself.

Lauren unlocked her car door and opened it, placing one foot inside while Deirdre continued talking.

“You know, it’s so nice to meet people who actually care about baking. And gossip too.” She winked. “I can’t stand people who think they’re better than others. You know, like that Colton. Acting like he’s all high and mighty when we all know he’s got about three different jobs, and he lives in the trailer park.”

Lauren opened her mouth to say something.

“And don’t even get me started on that Kayla girl. Mild as milk and with hardly two pennies to rub together. You heard about her father, I assume? Being ill? As if. The man’s never been ill a day in his life. Everybody knows he’s hiding out on his brother’s farm outside of town for a reason. Illegal trade. Kayla might not want to be associated with him, but she can’t escape her father’s legacy forever. Besides, it’s hardly fitting that she be crowned the winner of a contest when her father is a thief!”

“A thief?” I asked, from the passenger side of the car.

“Oh yeah. Steals from the common man.” Deirdre paused. “Randy Wren is a common car thief. A kleptomaniac. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ran in the family, you know. Regardless, Kayla’s not the type of person who should win the grand prize and neither is Colton. Both of them would be terrible representations of—”

“We have to go,” Lauren said, loudly. “We have places to be. It was nice to meet you.” She got into the car and started the engine.

I followed her lead.

Deirdre hovered beside the car for a second longer, still talking as if we could hear her, before waving a hand and hurrying off to her car nearby. A black Prius.

Kayla and Colton had both left the Hungry Steer well before us, and I hadn’t been able to glimpse their vehicles, unfortunately.

Lauren got us on the road before letting out a massive sigh. “I have never met a woman who talks that much. There’s gossip and then there’s whatever that was. Now, you know I don’t like to talk ill of people, but good heavens.”

“It was a bit much.” But illuminating at the same time. Without having to interview either Colton or Kayla, I had discovered that both of them were poor, perhaps desperate for money, and Kayla’s father was a thief.

It was good to have that information, but it didn’t provide much evidence per se. Lauren and I drove through town in silence, her humming to a tune on the radio and me scanning the town’s streets.
