âNow, Iâm so glad to have met yâall.â Deirdre hadnât quit talking since weâd risen from the dining table. Sheâd followed behind us into the parking lot, right up to Laurenâs car. âAnd by that I mean, just you two. Those others are so dry my skin started turning ashy.â
âIt was nice to meet you too, Deirdre,â Lauren said, sweetly.
âYeah.â That was as far as I could take it without exposing myself.
Lauren unlocked her car door and opened it, placing one foot inside while Deirdre continued talking.
âYou know, itâs so nice to meet people who actually care about baking. And gossip too.â She winked. âI canât stand people who think theyâre better than others. You know, like that Colton. Acting like heâs all high and mighty when we all know heâs got about three different jobs, and he lives in the trailer park.â
Lauren opened her mouth to say something.
âAnd donât even get me started on that Kayla girl. Mild as milk and with hardly two pennies to rub together. You heard about her father, I assume? Being ill? As if. The manâs never been ill a day in his life. Everybody knows heâs hiding out on his brotherâs farm outside of town for a reason. Illegal trade. Kayla might not want to be associated with him, but she canât escape her fatherâs legacy forever. Besides, itâs hardly fitting that she be crowned the winner of a contest when her father is a thief!â
âA thief?â I asked, from the passenger side of the car.
âOh yeah. Steals from the common man.â Deirdre paused. âRandy Wren is a common car thief. A kleptomaniac. I wouldnât be surprised if it ran in the family, you know. Regardless, Kaylaâs not the type of person who should win the grand prize and neither is Colton. Both of them would be terrible representations ofââ
âWe have to go,â Lauren said, loudly. âWe have places to be. It was nice to meet you.â She got into the car and started the engine.
I followed her lead.
Deirdre hovered beside the car for a second longer, still talking as if we could hear her, before waving a hand and hurrying off to her car nearby. A black Prius.
Kayla and Colton had both left the Hungry Steer well before us, and I hadnât been able to glimpse their vehicles, unfortunately.
Lauren got us on the road before letting out a massive sigh. âI have never met a woman who talks that much. Thereâs gossip and then thereâs whatever that was. Now, you know I donât like to talk ill of people, but good heavens.â
âIt was a bit much.â But illuminating at the same time. Without having to interview either Colton or Kayla, I had discovered that both of them were poor, perhaps desperate for money, and Kaylaâs father was a thief.
It was good to have that information, but it didnât provide much evidence per se. Lauren and I drove through town in silence, her humming to a tune on the radio and me scanning the townâs streets.
